It would be remiss of us to talk about parks and not mention the one that started it all – just over the water, it’s the original: Birkenhead Park. This Paxton-designed gem was the world’s first municipal park, and still retains it grandeur, its sense of proportion, and its stunning canopy of mature specimen trees.
The Oriental Bridge (now re-open), the Boathouse and the new Park Vistor Centre show that this park is still very much loved, and respected by the local community: no wonder the town planners of New York took inspiration from Birkenhead when they designed Central Park.
