Now part of Liverpool University, these world-class gardens sweep down to the banks of the River Dee, in a series of terraces, leafy glades, sweeping lawns and ornamental ponds.

In spring, the laburnum arch and vibrant rhododendrons and azelias are a feast for the senses, but there’s always something wonderful to see here (even night walks, with judiciously placed illuminations adding an ethereal sheen to the herbaceous borders, waterfalls and specimen trees.

There’s a lovely refectory and gift shop, and lots of guided tours and events throughout the year.
