Things to do:

Another University of Liverpool campus pub, the Augustus Johns – known locally as AJ’s – presents a brutal and unpretty exterior and fairly unremarkable interior. However, there’s a very good reason why it’s beloved of ale drinkers – there’s a wide selection of hand pumps serving local beers and the pub doesn’t neglect ciders or perries either. If the apples and pears are your thing you have to give AJ’s a go.

There’s a juke box, live sport, bar meals here but this is primarily about the beer – expect local breweries to be well represented here, as the awesome collection of pump clips attest to.

Augustus John himself? A painter and academic at the University of Liverpool, honoured further by the university naming its very own campus-run pub after him following a modernist extension of the campus towards Brownlow Hill. The Augustus John pub may not speak immediately of a bohemian Victorian artist, but it’s hardly-cool retro ambiance is pleasingly quaint in a world of dirty burgers, 8% £8 IPAs and po-mo stylings.
