West Kirby – at the very edges of the north-west Wirral – almost feels like the edge of the world sometimes. The White Lion has a similar feeling; it’s the sort of pub that could have been pretty much as it is now at any time over the last 100 years.

It’s a cosy pub full of nooks and crannies and warming stoves, around which you can congregate with a good choice of regular beers, such as Black Sheep, and a couple of guest ales.

The stone walls and flags are complemented by the classic paraphernalia of an old pub – bed pans, brewery tat, horse brasses – and there’s a nautical element too, which befits an alehouse perched on the edge of the Irish Sea.
