The second, larger, venue for Liverpool’s best loved deli-cum-restaurant, Delifonseca Dockside takes all the great ingredients of its city centre outlet and super-sizes them in this handsome, riverside joint.

Expect the same casual dining, with lots of good-quality meat and fish dishes on the specials board – think game-y, traditional English dishes that rely on the quality of ingredients, skills of the Delifonseca chefs and belief in honest good food. Sundays mean generous, filling roasts with locally-sourced chicken, lamb and beef – plus spuds, Yorkshires and plenty of veg.

Vegetarians are well-catered for too, with up to three specials offering a range of food for flesh-dodgers: expect curries, tarts and pasta. There’s also a lengthy a la caret menu of platters sourced straight from the adjoining delicatessen, sandwiches and salads. Best among these are an old stand-by: Delifonseca’s absolute stunning Po’ Boys, one of Liverpool’s best dishes.

There are plenty of choices on the drinks menu, with local beers (you can ask for advice on which will suit the food you choose) and wide selection of wines. Delifonseca Dockside is about a mile from the city centre so if you’re driving there’s a better range of soft drink and low-alcohol beers than you might expect.

After dessert (be sure to check out Masterchef The Professionals winner Claire Lara’s in-house cakes), you might fancy having a stroll around the Food Hall, stocked to the gills full of vegetables, European cheeses, preserves and so much more.

You’ll also find Edge & Sons, the in-house award-winning Wirral family butchers serving local, free range, British, native and rare breed livestock. The butchers has its own slaughterhouse so you can be sure of getting the highest quality meat – and ask for advice on what to do with it. There are great hampers to give as gifts too if you’re struggling for inspiration come Christmas.

Events? Why yes. There are butchery masterclasses and wine evenings at Delifonseca Dockside, plus events to celebrate Christmas too. And the maitre’d But all told the emphasis here is on the quality of the food: Great lunches, food to go, a fabulous deli/winestore/butchers and grocers make this Liverpool’s go-to food stop.
