With its elegant and assured new wing, The Bluecoat has even more gallery space than ever, to show its rich and diverse calendar of arts.

The Bluecoat is multi-discplinary, so there’s art, installation, photography and mixed media) exhibitions, talks, film shows and – in the intimate first floor performance space – gigs, dance events and ‘studio’ theatre productions.

There’s a cluster of independent shops in the courtyard, a good restaurant and, in the Bluecoat Display Centre, the city’s best craft retail experience – almost a gallery in itself – showcasing local and regional artists’ jewellers’ and ceramicists’ work.

The building (at least most of it) is the city’s oldest – dating to 1708.
