Following a multi-million pound facelift, this World Museum Liverpool is engaging and educational – and documents expertly Liverpool’s claim to be ‘The World in One City’, with its hauls from mercantile adventures around the globe at a time when Liverpool could seriously claim to be the Second City of Empire.
Lavishly designed ante-rooms, with dim lights and informative displays, showcase delicate, priceless and fragile booty from all ports north, east, south and west. The museum is particularly strong on the Ancient World, and houses a fine Egyptology collection. Kids will love the Aquarium, Bug House and interactive gubbins dotted around, and there’s an excellent old-school Planetarium too.
The Clore Natural History centre also provides a kind of meta museum experience, allowing for hands-on encounters with huge fossils, hippopotamus skulls and rare minerals. Free, cafe, shops, lift. Planetarium free but ticketed.
