South Liverpool

South Liverpool is the lung of the city, largely consisting of leafy suburbs and Victorian parks. While South Liverpool also incorporates less bucolic urban areas such as Wavertree, Toxteth and Speke, the area is characterised by the airy spaces and wide avenues of Aigburth, Allerton and Mossley Hill, and the famous greenery of Victorian Sefton Park, Greenbank Park and Calderstones Park.

South Liverpool is perhaps best known for two of its famous streets: The Beatles’ famed Penny Lane may attract tourists, but it’s the nearby Allerton Road that contains a mile of bars, restaurants and shops. Meanwhile, on the other side of Sefton Park, which hosts many of the city’s larger events such as Africa Oye and the Liverpool Food and Drink Festival, is Lark Lane – a popular destination for those in search of food and drink and host to a number of niche shops and outlets.

Further South, down Aigburth Road, is the Corke Gallery and Liverpool Cricket Club, where Lancashire Cricket Club play a number of fixtures every year. Head the other way, towards town, from Lark Lane and there’s the humming Toxteth area. While famous for the riots in the early 1980s the area also incorporates the Lodge Lane area; a fascinating mixture of creeds and cultures.
